The name literally means “bear in a hole,” and the concept is exactly that: you order your drink, then receive it through a mysterious hole from one of the cafe’s mystical bears. But there’s more to it than just being cute. This kind of contactless service can also create a more comfortable working environment for people who may find face-to-face customer service difficult, including those with social anxiety or similar challenges. The idea is that staff can still work in hospitality, but without the pressure of direct interaction. The Kyoto store also has its own exclusive experience called “Truth of the Bear,” where you enter the forest, meet the Bear of Truth, and receive a special prize if you make it to the end. It’s funny, slightly scary, and definitely memorable. We tried the full Kyoto-only experience, played gacha, got gifts, received drinks in Kyoto-exclusive bear-shaped bottles, and left with an exclusive ANAKUMA fan. But you don’t have to do the full experience.
