yea it's interesting to see my mom try to cash checks from a relationship account she made minimal deposits to. I love her, but we dont share interests, values, goals.. I have surface friends that are more connected to who I am.

This is why I don’t take advice from my parents. It’s always what they think is best, not what’s actually best for me as an individual…because they don’t even know me as a person or what kind of life I want to live. Plus, their ‘advice’ always seems to benefit them in some way.

I won a state award for my training of EMTs. My parents never asked about what I did so they didnt know I was a training officer with a captain rank (2nd highest you can go). My partner at the time tried to brag about me to a bartender and my parents overheard, jumped in with “OUR DAUGHTER? Teaching someone? HA!” When he said “um do you not know she is one of the top rated training curriculum developers in the state? I suddenly realized “wait they literally know nothing about me past the age of 9 when I didnt want to raise my brother for them”

i remember when i started therapy i would notice my mom would say "we" alot, true example "we dont like that brand" and id have to start correcting her like no YOU dont. you dont even know what i do and dont like. i am not you or an extension of you

Against my better judgement I told my mom I was undergoing fertility testing. Her response was “but you’ve never wanted kids..” You’re right. When I was 20 I wasn’t interested but I’m in my 30s and married and you’ve never bothered getting to know me as an adult. She knew the date of my appointment and never asked how it went.

Let go of control! If you are a parent you are NOT in control. As a parent that is the most solid advice I could give any parent any age child. Stop trying to control them, they are there own person.

I remembrer my mom said "I didn't know you like to sing" when I was 21 I've been singing since I was a kid and was in choir and I sing in every roadtrip to college but cause my sister was more into theater she couldn't attribute two traits to her children
