it looks way better on a PC CRT monitor if you have one, run it at 480p 60hz and it will be perfect native resolution. thats how I did my first play through of chapter 5 on launch day

well, it could just be your pc making the game crash. it doesnt make sense that using a monitor with a 4:3 ratio makes the game crash, considering that the game is 4:3 and detects the lower resolution with a 4:3 ratio

There is a phenomenal video by Noodle on YouTube called "What Did You Do" about how CRT TVs completely change pixel art and the philosophy of making it. There's also a section of the video on Deltarune, and overall I'd absolutely recommend watching it.

As someone with 6 CRTs I doubt it’s the tv itself causing any issues, also if you want to experience it with fine details crt pc monitors work great as they’re high resolution and have high refresh rates. Btw I see you’re using composite cables which have muddy colors and dot crawl I recommend using s video or component.

I've been using interlacing to improve the quality on my crt. before it used to be a blurry mess, but now i can actually read most text.

Idk if you already did this, but you can make the screen split with 2 separate monitors and make the 2nd monitor (the TV) 4:3 in settings. Iirc it goes down to 960 x 720 on Windows, but I use a messed up laptop on my CRT like that and it works just fine.
