Yes! The fact people are being so hard on her when this is her first book and now she’s doing a movie. I didn’t think she would navigate this where most people are pleased. Amari is my only real gripe but I want more black fantasy and this was a stepping stone. People are short sighted.

See if we lived in a perfect world where we got mainstream fantasy films with leading black actors, then not seeing the movie because of Amandla’s casting is a valid reason but we don’t live in that perfect world. A lot people and book fans don’t understand that if this movie flops, we won’t get black lead fantasy film for a long time. Hollywood is just gonna see unprofitable and not care about the colorism storylines that people are complaining about. I really do hope audiences support this film. I want more black led films. I need Hollywood to make more fantasy films with black actors and characters

Bad rep is bad rep. No one gives cares that the movie industry works a certain way. Before black people were regulated to worse roles and it was ‘just how the industry works’ might be the reality but it’s not ok. So people have every right to be pissed at the author for changing there tune after supporting this bs at the first round of backlash. We want actual good rep we were promised. Also colorism is a serious issue within the black diaspora. Darker skin main female protagonist means something to a lot of people

I'm still watching it. It has an amazing cast- at least for the people I know. All I needed to see was Viola Davis. I doubt they would've ever reached into the themes of colorism. The objective is to reach a larger global audience and some themes get dropped. Welcome to Hollywood.
