@robertmilesai: Have you tried Thinking? It's pretty good! I know this advice sounds absurd, but, at least think about it. (By the way, judging an idea by irrelevant details about its presentation is a great example of the kind of 'going on vibes'## non-thinking I was talking about) #thinkaboutit
I feel this is related to curiosity. The smartest people I’ve ever met were by far the most curious, and the most open-minded. The ideas they would dismiss were much less likely to have been dismissed without their actual merits considered. Those people appeared less tethered to biases. I’ve worked with a handful of these folks throughout my life and it never ceases to be humbling and motivating

I’m kind of with you with your overall point, but that running analogy does not work, and if anything weakens your argument.

When people accuse me of being smart, I usually correct them and say it’s not that I’m smart. It’s that I’m intellectually curious and I bother to find answers when I have a question.

Ironically it took me a very long time to register that people *don't like* thinking. This was a surprise to me. What a dummy I am:P I hadn't even considered the option. To me, I learn new fun fact and then I get to go home and think about it in the bath, in bed as I drift off, on the bus - a delicacy I get to enjoy over and over. Realizing that people don't just not think, but actively revile and avoid it, it makes far more sense of power structures and of religion.

Totally agree, but it's rather depressing to know how many people actively choose not to think. There are far too many people who pay to have a machine "think" for them.

Ive noticed that with spelling and grammar. I often don't know how to spell a word, but Im willing to put in the effort to look it up.

David Foster Wallace had an interesting essay/speech similar to this. It’s called “This is Water.” It discusses choosing what to think about.

Think Meta :
Intelligence doesn’t correlate strongly with openness. More intelligent people have greater cognitive capacity, but they often restrict their engagement to domains of personal interest, partly because deep analytic processing is effort‑intensive. So while they are more capable of evaluating alternative viewpoints, that doesn’t imply a greater willingness to do so. Empirically, willingness to consider diverse perspectives tracks more reliably with the first four years of university education, after which the effect plateaus.

this is somewhat of an obvious observation, like "artists are actually people that draw more than others." The difficulty of these things is beginning to draw, think etc as the dopaminergic rewards are low when you haven't built the skill and you feel you can't draw like all the people online or.. simply don't get it when reading a hard text.

People use the word “talent” to dismiss the effort put forth by those skilled at their craft. That pianist is so talented. That athlete is so talented. No, those people kept doing it when others stopped.

I think this is very true. A story from my own life: I used to read a lot of educational books and watch or listen to a lot of news and educational content. Then I kind of grew tired of it for a while and switched mostly to fictional content, and my ability to explain, or even think about, complex topics definitely declined during that period.
