MOTHER-IN-LAW JAILED FOR SEVEN YEARS AFTER KEEPING THREE WOMEN AS ‘SLAVES AND DOGS’ A 63-year-old woman was jailed for seven years after falsely imprisoning three of her daughters-in-law and subjecting them to years of physical and psychological abuse inside the family home in Blackburn. Naseebah Bibi, of Pringle Street, controlled the three women — who were also her nieces — after they came to Britain from Pakistan following arranged marriages to her three sons, their first cousins. Preston Crown Court heard the women had arrived in the UK expecting to begin happy family lives. Instead, prosecutors said they were isolated from the outside world, assaulted and forced to live under Bibi’s control. One of the women told police she had been made to work on an industrial sewing machine day and night for 13 years. YEARS OF FALSE IMPRISONMENT Bibi denied falsely imprisoning Nagina Akhtar between 1993 and 2006, Tazeem Akhtar between 2001 and 2003, and Nisbah Akhtar between 2005 and 2007. She was convicted following a trial. The court heard that after the women arrived in Britain, Bibi exercised extraordinary control over their everyday lives. They were not permitted to leave the family home without her permission and were prevented from maintaining normal contact with the outside world. When the women disobeyed her or answered back, Bibi would assault them. The court heard she slapped them across the face and struck them with a brush handle. The prolonged treatment left the victims living in fear and suffering significant psychological consequences. ‘DEGREE OF CRUELTY AND IMPRISONMENT’ Sentencing Bibi, Judge Robert Brown said the evidence demonstrated that the three women had suffered both physical and psychological trauma and had spent long periods living in fear. The judge acknowledged there was a cultural background surrounding the arranged marriages and that Bibi herself had felt obliged to follow her parents’ wishes concerning those arrangements. But he made clear that cultural considerations could never justify what happened afterwards. He said none of those circumstances could excuse the “degree of cruelty and imprisonment” inflicted upon the three victims. SEVEN-YEAR SENTENCE Bibi was sentenced to seven years, with the judge ordering that she serve three-and-a-half years in custody before becoming eligible for release on licence. She would then remain under supervision so authorities could continue monitoring her circumstances and household. Judge Brown said he had considered Bibi’s poor physical and mental health when determining the custodial element of the sentence, while balancing the need to punish her, deter further offending and protect the public. The judge also said he intended to contact immigration authorities concerning a fourth woman who had been betrothed to one of Bibi’s sons. VICTIMS PRAISED FOR COMING FORWARD Lancashire Police praised the three women for showing what officers described as “immense courage” by reporting what had happened. Sergeant John Rigby, from the force’s community cohesion unit, acknowledged the complex family and cultural pressures victims could face when reporting abuse. Some had taken a stand despite opposition from within their own families. Police said the case demonstrated that allegations of this nature would be investigated and offenders brought before the courts.
