When my students saw the word cosmotologist, they thought it had something to do with cosmos — the stars and universe. I did too! But this turned into a great Greek root lesson. We learned that cosmos also means “to adorn or beautify,” which connects perfectly to cosmetics and cosmetologist. Then we broke down the suffix -ist, meaning “a person who does.” So a cosmetologist is literally a person who beautifies! This vocabulary and spelling lesson connects word origins, suffixes, and meaning — showing how one small ending can completely change what a word teaches us. #EnglishLesson #WordOrigins #GreekRoots #ESLLesson
