In English, should we say “I’m LAYING on my bed”, or “I’m LYING on my bed”? To find the answer to this question, we have to take a look at the meanings of the verbs “lay” and “lie”, and that’s exactly what I do in today’s video! In short, we need to say “I’m LYING on my bed” because “lie” is the verb that refers to putting your body in a horizontal position on something like your bed, a couch, or the ground. When using this verb, we do NOT use it with an object, so it is incorrect to say something like “I lie my hands on the ground.” However, to LAY something means to put it down, and it is ALWAYS used with an object. For example, we could say something like “I laid down my yoga mat before my yoga class started.” So, if you want someone to put themselves in a resting horizontal position, you have to tell them to LIE DOWN, NOT lay down. However, it is very common for native English speakers to use “lay down” to tell someone to lie down. Another aspect of the difference between these verbs that confuses English learners is their past tense forms; the past tense of the verb “lay” is “laid”, while the past tense of “lie” is, in fact, “lay.” However, it sounds weird to many English learners to use “lay” as a past tense verb because it is also a present tense verb, so it is common to use “laid” as the past tense of “lie”, even though this is incorrect. Practice using these verbs correctly by writing sentences with them in the comments below, and don’t forget to like and follow if this video was helpful! 😊 . . . . . #learnenglishonline #aprenderinglesonline #apprendrelanglais #english #ingles #anglais #everydayenglish #advancedenglish #naturalenglish #esl #eslteacher #englishgrammar #whatsthedifference
