Concorde. Decades ahead of its time While commercial airliners flew at around 900 km/h (560 mph), Concorde crossed the skies at Mach 2, over 2,100 km/h (1,300 mph). That meant crossing the Atlantic in just over three hours. Its engineering was remarkably sophisticated: delta wings for supersonic stability, a fuselage designed to expand with the heat generated by high speed, and a droop nose that lowered during landing to improve the pilots' visibility. It was essentially a flying laboratory. But extreme technology came at an extreme cost. Fuel consumption was high, the sonic boom restricted routes, and operating costs were enormous. After the Air France Flight 4590 crash in 2000, public confidence dropped dramatically. In 2003, Concorde made its final flight. And perhaps that's the most symbolic part of the story: even the most advanced machines ever created by humanity cannot escape the oldest rule in the universe... Nothing lasts forever. Concorde left the skies, but it also left behind a question that still echoes through engineering today: when will we fly faster than sound again?
