Stop exercising just to lose weight. I have talked about this a gazillion times recently, but someone asked me about it which goes to show I need to make it a gazillion and one. Exercise is great. It is one of the best things you can do for your health. BUT, exercise is not a reliable tool for losing weight *in isolation*. If you tell 1,000 people to start jogging and you *do not* give them any accompanying dietary advice, a good chunk of them won’t lose weight at all. Some of them might even gain weight. Because most exercise programs do not burn a lot of energy, and exercise can encourage compensatory mechanisms like 1) an increase in hunger 2) a decrease in other forms of movement. Basically meaning if you go for a jog, you might get home and 1) feel hungrier, so you eat more 2) feel more lethargic, so you move less. Although this doesn’t happen to everyone, it is super important to be aware of, because a lot of people only judge their exercise routines effectiveness by whether they lose weight or not. And, when weight is the only marker of success, it can cause people to stop doing something that is incredible for their health, solely because the number on the scales doesn’t move. Please, please exercise, and make sure you have other motivations for doing so than simply what the number on the scales says. P.S.
