This has nothing to do with steam but rather Ubisoft neglecting AC1 on PC. it freezes because the game is trying to connect to servers that don't exist anymore. There's plenty workarounds online to get it to not freeze.

i had ghe same issue. the solution is to disable the wifi on your laptop and after u can normally play it. Idk why but with wifi on it doesnt work

I have this problem with GTA Vice City (the original pc port). Bought a steam key of the game for 20$, downloaded the game, it works well except I can't pause the game. If I pause the game I have 50/50 chance of getting a black screen requiring me to reboot my pc
