@olichan1111: it’s kind of weird, being ethnically Japanese but not “Japanese” in Japan haha 😂 comment if you know what I mean by that LOL #japan #foreignerinjapan #lifeinjapan #japantiktok #japanesepeople
We still have to know the hidden rules. Not everything is explained to us, we just have to know it I end up having to use Google most of the time because they don’t explain everything to me

Omg me too! I’m Japanese, but was born and raised in Canada. I get so nervous going places by myself because my face says “Japanese” but my language skills say “foreigner”. I thankfully haven’t had any negative encounters, though.

As a Latina here in Japan who grew up in the States 🇺🇸 I can understand exactly where you're coming from. Whenever I visit family in South America I blend in but then when I open my mouth (can't speak Spanish) I get the dirtiest looks. Here in Japan it's fine because I'm not expected to "blend in" but somehow still get penalized for unknowingly breaking some "unspoken" rule. Being a foreigner in Japan is just taking L's left and right 😭😭

Every time I go to Mexico I feel like a fraud because I’m Mexican but can’t speak Spanish well. My family became too Americanized to assimilate and now we lost a whole part of our culture 😭 it’s such a weird dynamic!

“The grass is greener on the other side”. Both sides have pros and cons, I’ve experienced them as a foreigner and seen them with my Japanese friends and coworkers. There are things I’m envious of in my Japanese friends and coworkers, and there are things I don’t envy at all and vice versa!

I wrote fanfiction on this exact topic with a mixed Japanese character, a "Kikokushijo" if you will? During my research I came across the "dancing bear, failed heir" idea in Asia and how like to navigate that very fine line.

I was working there in the 90s, I don’t think a week went by without a drunk salaryman screaming at me with no provocation. If things are worse now…

Don't you find it tough moving to Japan when you don't even want to be identified as Japanese, even though you are?

If you don't meet an expectation (big or small) someone is going to tell you bluntly to your face. It's hard for it not to feel rude at times. Especially, when you are in new situations and having to figure things out. There is no grace period.

I took the opposite approach and it really is mentally tolling to try to blend in, I wish I could see this 5 years ago.

I actually think Japanese get away with it more. I’ve seen Japanese with large luggage’s on the train but no one confronts them. I’ve seen Japanese eating and drinking on the train but no one says anything. They only give dirty looks to the foreigners esp if you’re Chinese ethnicity. I was with a Japanese Canadian friend on the train and no one cared that he brought large luggage and only gave me dirty looks as a Chinese Canadian. 😂

I live here too and my husband grew up here but isn’t Japanese he’s Taiwanese, tbh I just act like myself I still follow the unspoken “rules” here but I mean their are soooo many I can’t keep up sometimes. One time after I paid for a bottle of water at a convenience store I was going to drink it but the lady said I couldn’t open the bottle of water I literally just paid for in the store…but if I drink it outside some people consider it rude idk…it was so confusing to me. I also feel like some Japanese people add rules for foreigners but then don’t follow those rules either.

I didn't realize anti-foreigner sentiment included the Japanese diaspora. Is it a different type from how they treat non-Japanese people, or is it the same? Does treatment change based on the country you're from, like if you're from Brazil or Canada?
