@g30w0r1d: The Sedlec Ossuary, often called the "Bone Church," is a Roman Catholic chapel in Kutná Hora, Czech Republic. It houses the remains of 40,000 to 70,000 people, creatively arranged into macabre masterpieces like skull garlands, towering bone pyramids, a Schwarzenberg family coat of arms, and a chandelier featuring every human bone. In 1278, an abbot returning from Jerusalem sprinkled "Holy Soil" from Golgotha across the Sedlec Abbey cemetery. This made the graveyard a highly coveted burial site. During the 14th-century Black Death and the 15th-century Hussite Wars, the cemetery overflowed. Exhumed bones were moved to the chapel's lower level to make room for new graves. In 1870, a local woodcarver named František Rint was hired to artistically organize the massive piles of remains. #czechia #geography #aesthetic #core #facts

It’s not decorative, it’s a way to honour those who were persecuted for their faith
