No. She knew exactly what the command meant. She had simply learned that she could get away with not holding the position. And this is something many dog owners miss. Dogs don’t only learn commands. They learn patterns. They also learn to read us. Our body language. Our tone. Our timing. Even how serious we are about what we’re asking. Tilda knows Bulus. She knows when he really means business and when she can get away with testing him. That’s why consistency matters. If you tell a dog “down” and allow her to get back up whenever she wants, she eventually learns that “down” doesn’t really mean stay down. The command starts losing its meaning. The answer isn’t shouting. It isn’t anger. It’s consistency. Give the command once. Make the expectation clear. Reward the correct response. And follow through every time. Tilda wasn’t being stubborn today. She was showing us exactly what she had learned. Sometimes, training isn’t about teaching the dog a new command.
