@washingtonpost: Washington, D.C., celebrated the 250th anniversary of America’s independence with over 850,000 fireworks after scorching weather and lightning prompted officials to evacuate the National Mall. As Americans sweltered, President Trump said he planned to “make a really long speech … just to show that I can do anything.” Thousands of Americans arrived in the nation's capital this week at a time when national pride has reached its lowest point since Gallup started asking people about it 25 years ago. Awaiting the crowds in D.C. was the promise of a spectacle intended to allay the disunity: rodeos, concerts, reenactments, speeches, parades, a sprawling fair, burgers and dogs and $12 Bud Lights, ear-popping flyovers and, for the planned late-night finale, record-breaking fireworks.
