@narcabusecoach: The most disturbing part of a smear campaign is that many people who turn against you barely know you. Some were neutral. Some had never spoken to you. Some may have even liked you. The narcissist reaches them first. They present themselves as wounded, worried, exhausted, and afraid. The listener starts feeling protective before checking whether the story is true. Human beings naturally respond to tears, fear, tone, and disgust. Our social-mirroring system helps us feel what another person appears to feel, but it cannot tell whether that emotion is honest, exaggerated, or performed. Then the narcissist attaches disgust to your name. You become unstable, cruel, immoral, dangerous, or abusive. They also tailor the story to each person. To a parent, you become unsafe. To a religious person, you become immoral. To an insecure colleague, you become arrogant. Soon, several people repeat the same story, and repetition begins sounding like evidence. This is how narcissists create witnesses who never witnessed anything. And by the time you defend yourself, your anger is called instability, your silence is called guilt, and your calmness is called coldness. A smear campaign damages more than your reputation. It trains your brain to scan every room, expression, silence, and delayed reply for danger.
