@thecreasegoalie: Harsh truth: playing competitive sports, especially team sports, makes your kid a better person. The value of sports is so important to our family. It builds leadership and teamwork, grit and resilience. You can really only understand the depth and reality of this if you journey with your kid through sport. There are so many obstacles, ups and downs, so much joy and heartbreak. This translates into kids who are well rounded, fun to be around, and kids who will probably be very employable someday. Beyond that, when they get a chance to lead on the field, the ice, or the court, they will probably be the employers someday. I’ve been talking a lot about the money we spend on our kids sports lately. And it sure seems like a lot. Trust me, it’s a lot. But it’s so much more than the dollar amount for us. It’s truly an investment in the people they are becoming. And you just don’t get the same experience if you’re not playing competitively. Thanks to @lee_forsberg for this great audio, his research and insight. Couldn’t agree more.

I think you’re confusing correlation for causation. Those Fortune 500 CEOs didn’t get there because they played competitive sport. They were able to play competitive sport, sometimes multiple sports, because their families were well off. You also don’t play at a collegiate level unless your family has the means to send you to camps, extra coaching, training, etc. that got them to the better schools to get the better education and make the connections needed to be a Fortune 500 Executive

As parents it’s our job to expose our children to as many opportunities as we can in hopes that they find one thing that they enjoy and and continue with throughout their youth and possibly as an adult. It doesn’t matter if it’s the arts, sports or clubs. There is a lot you can learn. With that said, I think things have become so extreme with the time and money families choose to spend on travel sports, ect…In the end you need to have well rounded, kind respectful kiddos who’ll look back at their time doing things that they love for them and not for anyone else. Sorry, I got on my 🧼📦 for a moment. Lol

Almost all of Firefighters played sports and used some reference to sports to get hired. In Canada a fulltime firefighter works 5-7 days per month and makes $130,000CAD/year. And they have a way better schedule than teachers and get over 75% of the year off with an amazing salary, benefits and opportunity to work overtime and make even more money. If a FF works even 1 shift of OT that’s only probably 6 days a month of work and they can easily make $200,000. It’s absolutely wild. Better than owning your own business. It’s like being on a sports team.

Nah you do it because in 15 years you get to go “haha hey remember when the hotel at the tourney lost power and everyone…” and laugh with the kids about it

when i was a kid, the only kids in trouble with law, played no sports, weren't in band, had no interest in academia. i put my kids in sports and band and academics to help their self esteem and show them the value of being part of a team. lifelong interests and trying new things meeting new people

We all get the weekends and the value of playing youth sports. So if we have 95% are CEO’s then you think that they would come up with better ways to pay and help support youth sports.

Very true, however, the life long injures I have from childhood sports are real, I'm reminded of them when I wake up daily. I agree that sports do give you confidence and ability to work as a team. My recommendation, in my opinion, is to pick non-contact sports. The percent of injuries is much lower.

It also shows who came from families with money. It's almost impossible for kids to participate in house league let alone rep league if their parents don't make enough and have the ability to devote time to taking them.

because parents of kids who play travel/competitive sports are wealthy. they have a financial leg up over lots of kids. correlation vs causation.

There’s nearly 60 million kids in North America that plays organized sports. Those kids come from middle class to rich families backgrounds. These are the kids the gets the opportunity to have a post secondary education. That’s maybe why they get those opportunities. Not because they played organized sports.
