The priest gently placed a folded parchment painting before us and slowly began to unfold it. What first appeared as a compact bundle of aged animal skin and natural pigment gradually transformed into a vast circular composition, revealing saints angels and sacred biblical narratives arranged in a deeply symbolic order. These rare Ethiopian Orthodox parchment icons were most commonly produced between the 15th and 18th centuries, carefully preserved through centuries of monastic life in the highland churches of Tigray. Painted entirely with natural pigments on animal skin and designed to be both portable and sacred, the artwork unfolds like a living manuscript of faith, with each layer revealing another dimension of devotion, history, and meaning. In that moment it felt less like observing an artifact and more like witnessing a tradition still breathing through time. A powerful reminder that in Geralta heritage is not only preserved it is still alive.
