#emibonnie Bonnie and Emi had always been like that. They teased each other constantly, flirted, then laughed because they both knew there was nothing behind it. “Stop staring at me,” Bonnie didn't look away. “I'm literally not.” “You are.” “Maybe I'm just admiring the view.” Emi grinned. “You might fall in love with me.” Bonnie rolled her eyes. “Eww. I'd rather eat glass.” “Liar.” They laughed. That was their thing. There was no danger in saying I love you because they said it all the time. They meant it, too. They talked about relationships openly. And through all of it, they had each other. Bonnie never really questioned the little things Emi did for her. Emi opened bottles when Bonnie couldn't get the cap off, wiped her utensils, opened doors. Whenever Bonnie was upset, Emi hugged her without asking questions. Bonnie had never thought much about it. Those were just things Emi did. Until Emi's childhood friend came back into her life. Her name was Lyn. Lyn was funny and kind, and Emi was obviously happy to have someone from her childhood around again. Bonnie was happy for her. She really was. Until she started noticing things. The first time was at lunch. Lyn was struggling to open her bottle. Emi reached over. “Give it.” She twisted the cap open and handed it back. “Thanks,” Lyn said. Bonnie stared at her food. It was stupid. It was just a bottle. Emi had opened a hundred of those for her. It didn't mean anything. Then, a few days later, Bonnie watched Emi wipe Lyn's utensils before passing them over. Her chest tightened. She looked away. Then Emi opened the passenger door for Lyn. Bonnie stopped walking. She remembered all the times she'd complained about it. “You know I have hands, right?” “I know,” Emi would say. “I'm just being nice.” Bonnie had always secretly loved it. She had thought it was one of those things that belonged to them. Apparently, it didn't. And then there were the hugs. That was the one Bonnie couldn't ignore. She watched Emi pull Lyn into her arms after not seeing her for a week. Both arms around her. Lyn's cheek against Emi's shoulder. Emi's hand gently rubbing her back. Bonnie knew that hug. She had been held like that after bad days. She'd always thought Emi hugged her that way because Bonnie was special. But standing there, watching Emi do exactly the same thing to someone else. Maybe Emi was just like that. Maybe none of it had ever meant anything more. The realization came.

She had been held like that after bad days. She'd always thought Emi hugged her that way because Bonnie was special. But standing there, watching Emi do exactly the same thing to someone else. Maybe Emi was just like that. Maybe none of it had ever meant anything more. The realization came. "I'm such an idiot." Until the pinch in Bonnie's heart stopped feeling like a pinch. It became a punch. One evening, Bonnie sat beside Emi in her car. Emi handed her a bottle. “Here.” Bonnie stared at it. "Thanks." “What's wrong?” “Nothing.” Emi frowned. “You're looking at the bottle like it insulted you.” Bonnie laughed softly. Then she looked at Emi. “Do you think you treat everyone you love the same?” Emi thought for a moment. “Probably.” Bonnie's heart sank. “Why?” “Because if I love someone, I take care of them.” There it was. The answer she'd been afraid of. Not because you're 'you'. Not because you're 'special'. Just because Emi loved people that way. Bonnie looked down at her hands. She suddenly understood. She could be Emi's best friend. The person she'd trust with her life. Emi could love her deeply. Completely. Platonically. And Bonnie could spend the rest of her life being loved by Emi without ever being the one Emi was in love with. Maybe she had never stood a chance. That was simply how Emi loved people. Bonnie swallowed the ache in her throat. Emi glanced at her. “Why are you so quiet?” Bonnie smiled. “I'm fine.” “You sure?” “Yeah.” Emi leaned closer, studying her face. “Don't stare too much,” she teased. “You might fall in love with me.” Bonnie laughed. “Yeah,” she said, looking away. “Wouldn't that be tragic?” Emi laughed too. She didn't hear the heartbreak in it. And Bonnie didn't tell her. Because being Emi's best friend was still better than losing her completely. Even if Bonnie had finally realized that she would always be the person Emi loved... ...just never the love of her life. -
