I made the decision a long time ago to speak only English with my kids in the hope that they’d grow up bilingual. Every now and then, though, I like to mess with them by suddenly switching to Chinese—which they absolutely hate, mostly because they think my Chinese is terrible. But I think Millie, who’s far too smart for her own good, has finally worked out what I’m doing and refuses to give me the reaction I’m looking for. She’s clearly decided she’s above stooping to my childish level.
