I am a primary school teacher.I was also teaching in the UK for 6 years. The greek curriculum is way too advanced in comparison. Not necessarily good thing. Many students are in fact left behind, but for those who can make it they can EASILY access top tier unis. Many students go to Cambridge, Harvard or any other uni they want when they are top student's in Greece.

You were spot on! The curriculum is fast, excellence is what matters most, and some kids will sadly be left behind. It all boils down to how well a student will be prepared for the big finals (after the 3rd grade of lykeio) and how many points they'll receive to get into a good university

The guns were my deal breaker. Moved from a super sought after school district in the city we used to live in Washington state but the guns are where I draw the line. I’d rather they go to school in a shoe box than worry every day whether they’re coming home.

3:40 sec answer: if this is happening the first weeks it means they trying to find teacher for this class if this happend a random day maybe the school teachers have to do a meeting all together or a teacher is seek or something but its very normal and greek kids love it

I am amazed at how spot on you are with all the details you are describing. Yet your family seems to persevere. Kudos to all of you! I am an educator here in Greece, who grew up in America and went through the American system in the 70s and 80s. Huge differences.

About the inconsistency of the middle school schedule: the substitution system for teachers is very inflexible. The ministry hires substitutes at the end of every month in the beginning of the school year based on the needs that are reported by the schools. So a subject may not be taught for weeks or even the entire year. There is no day-to-day substitution system. If a teacher is absent the students are usually sent home earlier.

Other than after school tutors, there are also after school schools called frontisteiria. Everyone goes to a frontisterio to prepare for the panellenic exams from the 11th grade, deutera lykeiou, and some students start even earlier

In the middle school, there is a teacher for every subject. For example for B class, there is a teacher for Maths and an other teacher for Chemistry! Many schools don’t have teachers for all the subjects from the first day of school and that’s why there are gaps between the classes or you finish earlier that day. For example, when I was school, we had no German teacher for the whole year

I’m very impressed by the efforts of the public school teachers to help your kids adapt! It depends on the person of course, but still they found ways to help! And yes, the oral exams are offered to kids that struggle, for various reasons, I’m glad they offered this alternative to your son 👍

Are you able to share approximately how many students are in a typical class at your children’s school? I lived in Athens way back in 1973 and attended the American Community School and we had very small class sizes back then (such a long time ago). I had some of the best memories living in Greece. 🇬🇷

I think a huge problem with the school system is how they actually hire teachers and the system surrounding it. Dimotiko wasn't too bad, and we had a very positive experience with ours. the gymnasio is something different. up until Christmas last year we had 12 our of the 27 teachers required for the school. they were doing 3 lessons a day. there are some many issues with that school and I'm so glad it's only for 3 years.

You’re doing the best thing for your kids. We lived in Voula and put our kids in the public system. They did VERY well and went straight into the USA university system at 18 yrs old. 🥰💙🙏💙

Hey! I'm also from Evia! Though from a southern region. In middle school and high school each subject has mostly different professors. In Athens and Thessaloniki, those teacher gaps are filled faster because they are the big cities, while for those of us who are in smaller areas we would have to wait till February for the gaps to be filled. In those cases, sometimes the school makes the program so the kids can leave earlier since there are gaps in the curriculum, or they have a gap and thus free time or a teacher substitutes, depends on the grade and school.

I went through this very experience in 1992 when my father decided to move us to Athens. I too thought the curriculum was a bit more advanced particularly in subjects like math, physics and chemistry.

Regarding to your question for gymnasium (high school) teachers. Each teacher is focusing on a specific subjects. while in primary or grammar schools teachers are jack of all trades little bit of everything. Educational system in Greece is far from perfect and focusing on memory instead of critical thinking and as it tends to be fast paced many students attend extra tutors to cope with that fast paced schedule. Especially for the late high school classes as students prepare for exams to the various universities where the material needs to learn and memorize is a lot.
