Actually had this happen kinda, took my Yukon for a fuel pump told me it would be $400, a week later got a call saying it’s ready for pickup and it’ll be $1000, they replaced my battery, fixed some leak and then upped the price of the part, I paid the original $400 and left

Even if they don't pay for approved work we can't just keep their vehicle. Best we can do is a mechanics lein. It's not immediate but it does amount to either pay or the car becomes mine to cover costs. Never had to file one myself, but I know a few mechanics who have.
