June 27, 1844. Today we remember the martyrdom of Joseph Smith, who, along with his brother Hyrum, was murdered at Carthage Jail by an armed mob of well over a hundred men. Many had blackened or painted their faces to conceal their identities as they stormed the jail and took the lives of the Prophet and his brother. Joseph Smith was called by God to restore the gospel of Jesus Christ, translate the Book of Mormon, organize Christ’s Church once again, and proclaim the everlasting covenant to the world. Long before his ministry, the angel Moroni prophesied that his name would be known “for good and evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues” (Joseph Smith—History 1:33). Joseph himself declared, “No unhallowed hand can stop the work from progressing… the truth of God will go forth boldly, nobly, and independent, till it has penetrated every continent, visited every clime, swept every country, and sounded in every ear.” His testimony was sealed with his blood, but the work he helped restore continues to roll forth across the earth. “Praise to the man who communed with Jehovah!” As the hymn declares, “Millions shall know ‘Brother Joseph’ again… Mingling with Gods, he can plan for his brethren; Death cannot conquer the hero again.” Though men and women have fought against his name for generations, they have done so in vain. The Restoration continues to spread across the nations, and nothing can stop the work God has ordained. #JosephSmith #mormon #JesusChrist #exmormon #latterdaysaints
