@ergonx: Painful Corn 😖🦶 Ever wondered why a corn can become so incredibly painful? In today’s video, I’m removing a plantar hard corn from underneath the cuboid area of the foot. It’s not the most common place to develop a corn, but when it does occur, it can feel like you’re constantly walking on a small stone. A corn isn’t just “hard skin.” It’s your body’s response to too much pressure in one spot. When one area of the foot is overloaded, the skin tries to protect itself by becoming thicker and harder. Unfortunately, that thicker skin creates even more pressure every time you take a step. This starts what we call a positive feedback loop: ➡️ More pressure ➡️ More hard skin ➡️ More pressure ➡️ More pain Eventually, the hardened core of the corn behaves almost like a foreign body inside your foot. Every step pushes it deeper into the tissues, making walking increasingly uncomfortable. In this particular case, the corn is under the cuboid region of the foot. This can happen because the natural cushioning (fat pad) has thinned over time, or because the shape of the cuboid bone creates a small pressure point. Every foot is different, which is why it’s important to find the underlying cause rather than simply trimming the corn over and over again. Removing the corn gives immediate relief by taking away that painful pressure point, but that’s only the first step. The next question is: Why did it develop in the first place? As podiatrists, that’s what we’re really trying to solve. Sometimes it’s caused by footwear that’s concentrating pressure in one area. Sometimes it’s caused by the way the foot functions while walking. Sometimes it’s due to a prominent bone, reduced cushioning under the foot, or another structural issue that needs to be offloaded with an orthotic or, in some cases, assessed for surgical treatment. Unless the pressure is reduced, the corn will usually come back. This is also one of the reasons why supportive footwear is so important—especially if you’re on your feet all day at work. A well-designed work boot should help distribute pressure more evenly across the foot instead of allowing excessive pressure to build under one small area. Better support, cushioning and stability can help reduce overload on the skin and soft tissues, making corns less likely to develop or return. If you’re constantly getting painful corns, don’t just keep putting up with them. Find out why they’re occurring and address the underlying cause. Your feet will thank you every single day. 👣 Learn more about our podiatrist-designed arch support work boots and foot health advice at: https://ergonx.com.au #FootPain #Corns #Podiatrist #WorkBoots #Ergonx
