Brilliant. My council tax will go down. Bring it on. Council tax is currently unfair

The only fair tax is that we all pay the same. Council tax is for local schools roads police etc so since we all use it, we should all pay the same!

The point is that the current system is not fair either! Council tax is supposed to be monies for operating costs for your council - yet it is based on the perceived value of a property and not what services are available. Neither system is actually “fair”

It’s a wealth tax! It should be based on the number living at a property inc children as it is people that use the services, not houses! It’s just not fair that a family of 10 pays the same as a family of 2!

Surly the fairest way is everyone in the country pays the same amount. No one pays more or less than anyone else . I don’t understand how anyone can think differently.

In my view, the only fair way to do this is to assess the demand the family unit in a home places on services the tax paid funds. A family of 6 for example places more demand on local services and as such should pay more than a family of 3 in the same sized house. The size of the house has no effect on the services provided. If this comes in it’s clearly nothing more than a cash grab as from my observation, the government (particularly the current one) would not consider making changes unless it increased their tax revenue. A simple assessment of the number of children and adults in a home should inform the rate of tax. Also where would they get the value assessment of the property?

so if you rent a house then surely the landlord would have to pay the property tax as its there property

It’s a really sensible tax if you can replace stamp duty and council tax with property tax.

council tax is for services ..bigger houses don't recive more of the services pie ..call it what it is a wealth tax ...my family have pooled our resources to live together in a large house ..12 adults and three kids ...its taken me a year to get the council to give us a second bin..then they gave us a half size bin !!! 1 1/2 bins !!! we pay over 1200 a month for this and I still have to go down the dump every week !!!

But how would that work in rented property; housing association property or council houses as people don’t own the property.

When Rutland has the highest average council tax in the UK, even more than the most expensive places in London and the South, something needs to change. Although I think this idea of Burnham's is not the right answer.

But .. it does affect the rich more because there is no top limit, as there is now. I live in the SE and would be paying pretty much the same at 0.48%.
