They also supported opposite sides in conflicts such as the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Another important part of their rivalry was the Space Race, in which both sides competed to achieve major scientific and technological successes. Although tensions were often very high and there were several dangerous crises, including the Cuban Missile Crisis, NATO and the Soviet-led bloc avoided direct war because both possessed nuclear weapons, making the consequences potentially catastrophic. The Cold War ended in 1991 when the Soviet Union dissolved. The Warsaw Pact had already been dissolved, while NATO continued to exist and later admitted many new member countries from Central and Eastern Europe.
