Yeah no. As someone who had no screen time myself: we don't self regulate. I can't self regulate at all

when my parents regulated my screen time i was always (sometimes even forcing myself) to use my phone up until the deadline cause what if after the deadline i regret not doing so? but when she stopped i reduced my screen time by myself

"i dont self regulate" its if you have a healthy relationship with your parent, and are able to vent/figure out emotions.

Yeah it only takes one late night on your phone before school to make you turn it off early forever

Fun fact; giving your child an amount of freedom and only restricting things that actually need to be restricted teaches them grow on their own and trust you

For the confused ones in the comment about self regulating, and specifically with screen time. When you put restrictions on things like screen time, You teach that they need to specifically be on screens for as long as possible till timer hits 0 because they won't get a chance to after that. What that teaches you that even if you're bored, have a headache, are uninterested in screens at the time, you still obsess over it because of artificial scarcity. You are focusing on the screen itself rather than the messaging. Think of the obsessions people have with diamonds. Those things aren't anywhere near as rare as the prices that are being charged for them justify, yet it keeps being held back and keeps selling for a premium.

Honestly this is how my mom raised me, and since she started doing it this way, we’ve been so much closer. Maybe I won’t achieve the stars, but a happy family shines brighter <3

As someone without a screen time limit.... Yes I did start self regulating as soon as my brain realised I have access to a screen 24/7 so It's not like I NEED to use it because of some time limit.... It just became less rare for me.... And when that happened I just slowly lost interest in being chronically online

So a basic psychology thing we learn is that negative stimulus = learning but also positive stimulus = learning. The best learning material comes from natural situations. Like when you parent says “don’t touch the burner cause it’s hot” they do it anyways, they get burned and learn not to do it again. Parent says “don’t eat all that candy all at once” they do it and get a tummy ache and don’t do it again. Same can be said in reverse with positive stimulus. Most kids learn on their own experiences rather than what parents tell them is going to happen. Granted parents keep their kids out of danger and give proper explanations on why.

When I was younger I didn’t have a strict bedtime and I regulated perfectly fine, then my stepdad gave me and my sister a 8pm bedtime and I think I was more sleep deprived and more sneaky because of it

growing up there was 1 rule. ask and learn. my parents wore BIG on letting me and my brother figure stuff out for ourselves but if we had any questions about anything they wore always upfront and honest/ taught us whatever we needed

I regulated my kids bed time but once they hit a certain age ? around 10 you don't have to be sleeping but you do have to be in your room calming down for the day 9/10 they would just go to sleep not staying up all night or on their phone or playing video games just chill
