Before You Ride the Pamir Highway
Tips from the Road – a practical mini guide based on our ride. The Pamir Highway starts and ends in two major cities: Osh (KGZ) and Dushanbe (TJK).
Both are the places to fully prepare — service the bike, stock up on supplies, withdraw cash, and sort out connectivity. In this reel we show the route profile, altitudes, mountain passes, and towns where basic infrastructure actually exists. Below are the things that matter once you leave the cities behind. ⛽ Fuel
Once you leave Osh or Dushanbe, fuel becomes inconsistent.
In larger towns (Khorugh, Murghab, Qal’ai Khumb) fuel is usually available.
Unofficial fuel is also sold in some smaller towns and villages, often from containers — quality varies. Never skip a chance to refuel. 🛏 Accommodation
Guesthouses and homestays are the main option along the Pamir Highway.
Wild camping is also possible in many places, especially outside towns.
Facilities are basic, but distances and weather should always be considered when planning overnight stops. 🥫 Food & Shops
Small shops exist along the route, but food is not always fresh.
Hot meals are usually available in guesthouses or small local cafés.
Stomach issues are common — choose carefully and don’t rely on regular restaurant access. 🏧 ATMs & Cash
ATMs work reliably in Osh and Dushanbe, but are very rare along the Pamir Highway.
Currency exchange is possible in a few banks along the route.
Homestay owners sometimes help with exchanging cash, but rates are usually unfavorable. Carry enough cash from the start. 📶 Internet & Mobile Coverage
Good coverage in Osh and Dushanbe.
On the Pamir Highway, mobile signal is limited and often disappears completely between towns.
Only a small number of homestays offer Wi-Fi, usually slow and unreliable. Offline maps are essential. 📄 GBAO Permit
The Pamir Highway runs through the GBAO region.
Without a GBAO permit, you will not be allowed to continue — access is checked at checkpoints along the route. 📍 Reality Check
Altitude, distance, road conditions and weather matter more here than speed.
The Pamir Highway rewards preparation — not rushing. Save this if the Pamir Highway is on your list.
