Here’s how to think about under-bed storage differently.  As with all things dorm, bed types and sizes vary. Most schools have adjustable height beds. If the bed is not fully loftable (top bunk height), the top setting is called captain’s height, semi-lofted, junior-lofted, or raised (and there may be other names).  With beds at this top setting, you’ll have 28”-32” of clearance below the bed frame. That’s about 3 times the clearance under beds at home. Twin XL mattresses are 80” long, and you should be able to use every bit of that space as the bed frame is typically beyond the ends of the mattress. So you’ll have 80” of width and about 30” of height for storage, but this is the important part: don’t forget that you have 40” of DEPTH under that bed! Most of the popular storage drawers, carts, cubes, and fabric dressers are only 12”-16” deep. That leaves you with feet of space behind your ‘front’ storage, and that space is like gold in a dorm room. The best way to use that space is to store off-season clothes and shoes, extra bedding, a suitcase, sports equipment, and yes, even skis, snowboards, or golf clubs. ⛳ My son loved having a place to store his golf clubs! Not sure yet what your bed height will be? Start by researching your school’s dorms to understand the furniture options, whether beds can be raised or lofted, if bed risers are permitted, and if your school-provided dresser will fit under the bed.  Check the link in our bio for our full under-bed storage guide for semi-lofted setups with our favorite solutions and product recommendations, including our favorite back-to-back cart solution to easily and inexpensively utilize that “back” space.
