The big fear is how expensive major care is at the very end of life. I know I have enough for the majority of my retirement, but assisted living, major hospitalization, and/or hospice can be financially devastating. I’d rather die with my nest egg intact and getting passed to my descendants rather than run out during a crisis at the end

please explain how anyone could live on 500K? if you have a million dollars and use the 4% rule that's only $40,000 you're basically eating ramen noodles. at 2 million it's $80,000 which is a little more manageable but still not killing it. most people don't have 2 million..

Masterclass tip!!! Go out and get a 0% interest credit card for 21 mos. Put a trip of a lifetime on the card and go. Then set up monthly payments of $1000/mo on the bill for one year to pay it off early and rinse and repeat each year. The bill will force your use. 🤔

The goal is to save enough so that a 4% withdrawal every year covers all expenses. Or 4% withdrawal plus social security or pension or whatever covers all expenses. I don't want to lose any of my investment value. I want to live off of it while it grows, and pass it on to my children. The goal shouldn't be to spend all of your nest egg. That is stupid. No one knows when they are going to die. You could live to 65, or 90. So how would you even plan to spend all of your nest egg? Makes no sense.

My biggest problem is that we hard core saved for 30 years. She retired at 43 and I retired at 55. We don’t know how to spend money.

I just retired at 61 but am having trouble spending it. We scrimped and saved for so long it’s scary to shut that off.

I went to an advisor with less than 500,000 at 60. He looked at my Pension and showed me what I would have coming in. Wife had pension too. I retired few weeks later. Almost 8 years in and we have really enjoyed it. We draw a monthly check from that account plus 2 pension checks and 2 social security checks. And that account has grown some. Best decision I ever made.

super saver. retierd at 50, sold everyhing and traveled and played for 12 years. did all I wanted (70+ countires, plus whatever else I desired) went back to work 2 years ago not for the money (or the great insurance) but for the feeling of purpose and working with others. Will retire again, maybe in another year or two, but I enjoy the work and have already experienced the best retirement can offer while I was physically young enough to do anything. I look forward to my second retirement with an odd mixture of excitement and dread. ill die with my portfolio in tack because I have a good simple life and "more" is not always better.

Problem is you can't predict the market...lost $20,000 in the last f-ing week. So, you have to factor in those God damn 20-30% market drops where "the market" spends it FOR YOU!!!!! And (AND) if someone goes "broke" are you going to pick up their bills? 🤷♂️

Good post, but you’re talking about percentages……..in most of your examples, the folks are actually spending similar amounts…..12% of 500k is 60k, and 25% of 200k is 50k. I feel a lot of this “you don’t have enough” hype is promulgated by the investment bros who get 1% of the take, EVERY YEAR. Key here as well is owning the home you are retiring in.
