There seems to be a sudden stream of horses with crooked limbs and we can’t help but wonder why and how they all have such consistent and similar deformities. If we take a step back and attempt to draw parallels, there’s one observation that stands out - these are all heavily worked horses from lower income stables. When rescuing horses, the first thing we do is ask for the diet to ensure the transition to ours is easy and gradual to avoid colic. The horses we are dealing with here - namely carriage and/or marriage horses - live on the street with minimal grazing and a very bran-heavy diet (cheapest feed). Unfortunately, with this comes our first problem. Bran has an extreme phosphorus-to-calcium ratio (est 10:1), which can cause metabolic disorders, more specifically secondary hyperparathyroidism (big head syndrome) in which the the body essentially starts to suck out calcium from the bones in order to refill any calcium deficit. Naturally, this leads to a weaker bone structure. Second - these horses are worked heavily and mercilessly through wedding and tourist seasons. Which means even more added stress on the limbs causing suspensory injuries and tendon retractions which we can very clearly see here. A poor diet and excess work is crippling these horses and the owners are none the wiser. We are working on bringing home six more at the moment (wish us luck) but the message here is clear - Carriage rides and joy rides only feeds an industry of poorly kept and overworked horses. So please, know better and stop. Link in bio
