In order to extract the Gold there were a number of factors to consider. Our gold reserves are of a very low grade. Vast yes but requiring an enormous amount of material to be mined. This requires funding huge amounts and they need security. 2nd Boer was to secure these favourable conditions in order for the financial investment to take place !
