Yes. Once you leave school it’s hard to make friends or romantic partners

Yeah 3rd spaces haven’t gone away, the way people interact socially has changed and it’s mostly due to our phones. People don’t enter a space open to meeting strangers anymore, or making small talk with acquaintances you run into. I see videos on here about how people purposefully change their routines to avoid becoming regulars. We collectively have to change our attitudes toward informal social interactions if we want 3rd spaces to be what they were.

My third space is I go to a cafe and read. I’m never approached. I’ve never been the girl that has ever been approached or flirted with or even asked out. No matter how open, friendly I am. Making eye contact, asking open ended questions, remaining open to chat. I’m never spoken to. 😔

I hear people talk about this but it’s always so vague “we used to have spaces”. I’d love a specific- what did we have that we don’t now?

Hot take: The idea of the cold approach for getting dates is a 20th century invention that only worked for a specific period of time. The conditions for it to work don't exist anymore.

Growing up our third spaces were malls, roller rinks, amusement parks/local fairs. These spaces also taught people how to mingle and build confidence interacting with others. I rarely meet people these days that are good conversationalist.

Libraries are the best third space! There’s always programs going on, and almost all of them are completely free.

Most people used to meet in school, either high school or college. Now that people are getting married so much later they miss the opportunity.

Home goods is not a third space. A craft fair is not a third space. We used to have hobbies. Unfortunately now every place we go to make friends feels like a job interview and we all have our guards up.

All my adult life friends have come from work and volunteer jobs. That’s the only place I meet people now. Also living in Pinellas County, btw

I’ve joined clubs & subgroups/committees within said clubs. One club fell apart after the election, another one fell apart due to leadership mishandling funds. One is 2 hrs away from where I live. 2 of them stopped hosting meetings and only host the occasional get together every blue moon. One stopped hosting events all together. Every single time I try to be social it falls apart.

I miss the little independent coffee houses. There's a bar that has board game nights in addition to karaoke and trivia nights. They also have a full non alcoholic menu and a little kitchen...but it's still a bar:/

I was just thinking like “how am I gonna find people to date outside of social media?” I work with all women and hang out with my friends.

I agree. I try to go out but I either don't meet people because everyone is in their own group/world, or yeah, it costs too much and it feels like there has to be return on investment. I go solo to a lot of places because even making friends is weird anymore, and its just not what it should be

yesss heavy on the paid aspect— i feel like if i go to a coffee shop and pay almost $10 for a drink to socialize but i don’t meet anyone there, then i wasted my time and money and feel disappointed

Sooo true. The other element or rather the result is that your brain is also receiving messages every time you don’t meet someone in these spaces that it’s not worth it to go anymore. It can begin to feel like because it’s not producing love. It’s only producing disappointment.
