1 flag = 10,000 immigrants This animation follows people leaving Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Mexico and South America and settling in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand, year by year from 1950 to today. Each flag shows the country the person came from. In the 1950s the map is almost empty. The first waves are Algerians moving to France, Mexicans moving to the United States, and Indians and Pakistanis moving to Britain. In 1961 West Germany signed a guest worker deal with Turkey, and Turkish workers stream into Germany through the 1960s and 70s. In 1965 the US opened up its immigration system, and from then on flags from Asia start heading to America. Filipinos, Koreans, Chinese and Indians settle in California, New York, Texas and beyond. After the Vietnam War ends in 1975, a large wave of Vietnamese refugees arrives in the US, Australia, Canada and France. From the 1970s on, migration from Mexico to the US becomes the largest flow on the map, peaking between 1990 and 2007. Around 2000, Spain becomes a major destination for Moroccans, Ecuadorians, Colombians and Bolivians, while Indian and Chinese migration to the US, Canada and Australia keeps growing every year. The biggest burst from the Middle East comes in 2014 to 2017, when the Syrian civil war sends hundreds of thousands of people to Germany and Sweden. After 2015, Venezuelans head to the US and Spain, and in 2021 thousands of Hong Kongers begin moving to Britain. By 2026, the US has the largest concentration of flags, followed by Germany, the UK, France, Spain, Canada and Australia. Moves within each origin region and between origin regions are not shown. All figures are approximate and based on UN DESA international migrant stock estimates.#immigration #european #usa #immigrants #demographic
