A lot of people have asked me why I keep planting cucumber on these same three irrigated plots year after year instead of switching to whatever crop is trending. My answer has always been simple: Because the numbers have been consistent for years. These three plots are not the biggest farms I own, but they are my most profitable because they are close to me. I can monitor them almost every day, detect problems early, make timely decisions and ensure everything is done properly. Every year, I run four cucumber production cycles on these three irrigated plots two during the rainy season and two during the dry season. Rainy Season During each rainy-season cycle, I cultivate about 5,500 cucumber plants. From experience, I consistently harvest a minimum of 250 bags per cycle. To keep this calculation conservative, let's use ₦9,000 per bag, even though prices often go higher. 250 bags × ₦9,000 = ₦2,250,000 revenue per cycle. With two rainy-season cycles, that gives me: Plant Population: 5,500 plants × 2 cycles = 11,000 plants Harvest: 250 bags × 2 = 500 bags Revenue: ₦4,500,000 My production cost during the rainy season is about ₦1.5 million per cycle, which means: Total Cost: ₦3,000,000 Net Profit: ₦1,500,000 Dry Season The dry season is where irrigation really pays off. Because I have full irrigation, I increase my population to over 7,000 cucumber plants per cycle. A minimum harvest of 350 bags per cycle is my benchmark. Again, I'll use a conservative selling price of ₦20,000 per bag, even though prices can rise much higher. 350 bags × ₦20,000 = ₦7,000,000 revenue per cycle. With two dry-season cycles, the figures become: Plant Population: Over 7,000 plants × 2 cycles = Over 14,000 plants Harvest: 350 bags × 2 = 700 bags Revenue: ₦14,000,000 Production costs are higher because of fuel for irrigation and other operating expenses. I spend about ₦2.5 million per cycle, giving: Total Cost: ₦5,000,000 Net Profit: ₦9,000,000 Annual Performance When I combine both seasons, this is what these three irrigated plots produce every year: ✅ Four production cycles ✅ Over 25,000 cucumber plants cultivated annually ✅ 1,200 bags harvested annually 500 bags during the rainy season 700 bags during the dry season ✅ Annual Revenue: ₦18,500,000 ✅ Annual Production Cost: ₦8,000,000 ✅ Estimated Annual Net Profit: ₦10,500,000 Now you understand why I don't jump from one crop to another. I also have farms at the outskirts of Ibadan. They are much larger, but they are farther away. Transportation costs are higher, monitoring is more difficult, and during the rainy season I don't even cultivate vegetables there because I cannot supervise them the way I want. These three plots continue to outperform many bigger farms because they are close enough for proper management. That is the lesson I want every farmer to understand. Don't just buy land because it is big. Buy land you can manage. A well-managed three plots can generate more profit than twenty plots that are poorly supervised.
