Absolutely right! Also a great tip for starters is to divide one house payment by 12 and put that amount towards the principal every month. Example: if your mortgage is $1000 a month… $1000 divided by 12= $83.33. Put that $84 towards the principal every month and you will be making one extra house payment every year. Making that the minimum amount you pay extra every month really helps pay off your home faster, and adds more equity into your home. I’ve been able to take several years off of my mortgage by doing this.

As a Realtor, this is some of the best advice you can give! Paying just one additional payment per year toward principal only can reduce a 30 year mortgage by 8-10 years or even more in some cases!

We paid our 30 yr mortgage in 19 yrs and 7 months .. every month for those 19 yrs we paid and extra 170.00 on our principal balance.. we both quit smoking , stopped going out to eat so often and STOP spending money on coffee shops !!!!

Paying on your principal doesn’t change the monthly payment amount of your mortgage. What he probably did was removed his escrow account to go from 1100 to 550 , he took back over paying his own taxes and insurance separately from the mortgage payment. I do this for a living I work for a company for the last 10 years
