The Benjamin Franklin Effect simply describes a tendency: people sometimes feel warmer toward someone after doing them a small favor because our brains naturally seek consistency between our actions and our attitudes. Intention is what determines whether it builds trust or exploits it. In healthy relationships, asking for a small, genuine favor can create reciprocity, vulnerability, and connection. In abusive relationships, the same psychological principle can be weaponized. Some traffickers, coercive partners, and other abusers deliberately use small requests, incremental commitments, and reciprocity to strengthen trust and increase compliance over time. The tactic isn’t abusive by itself—the exploitation is. Psychology is like fire. It can keep someone warm… or burn their house down. The science is neutral.
