Growing up I was always told I was giving excuses, but to me it was just explaining what happened…I never really understood that before.

I felt this. If I do submit because the person is getting irritated, I go around feeling like I am keeping all these secrets inside because I couldn’t finish explaining. It’s very unnerving.

Am I the only person who would prefer the explanation with the phone charger? That's so much more informative...

LITERALLY TODAY I had a boss meeting specifically to address and review potential ideas in improving operational processes and the very first process deficiency I mentioned the manager goes "we aren't here to make excuses for lack of execution" I'm sorry I thought this meeting was about how THE SYSTEM MAKES THE JOB HARDER TO COMPLETE

But how do I know in challenging conversations what the person actually wants. As in what is the thing they are really asking?

I've always said it's about whether you lead with an apology or at least recognition of behaviour. "I'm really sorry about that" before launching in to an explanation goes such a long way.

I feel like I always respond with I’m sorry anymore rather than trying to explain anymore

As an autistic, I loved your detailed explanation because I’m like THAT MAKES SENSE and you were considerate it might be too late to text

I feel the opposite- when I explain I’m very concise with very few details- I don’t like communication with too many details I get overwhelmed unnecessarily.

I think that th overarching big picture theme is those reactions u describe are shaped by values over time. Values make a particular sequence of events in response to a given stimulus more likely than another given sequence over events. But values do that over time not in the moment. It’s th given reactions within the sequence of events which are more about the moment itself instead of long term patterns of such sequences of events which are shaped by values

I understand the reason to some extent, but I really wish people would stop asking questions they don't want answers. if all you want is an apology, why even ask for an explanation? Really bothers me

I also feel like we respond in that way, as neurodivergents, because we have always had to justify and try and validate our experience to people committed to misunderstanding us… hence the panicked over explaining.

I'm so thankful my husband understands this about me - he listens and lets me ramble off every detail of my perspective. It's not that we give excuses, it's that we fear being misunderstood. And honestly, it feels deceptive and dishonest to leave anything out, like I'm lying by omission or something

What deeply grieved me is letting go of the conversation. Like u mentioned I see the whole disagreement/ or incident as a series of causes and effects by two very good people who were both thinking and acting with good intentions. The reason for the conversation is simply to see where the disconnect was. The reason for wanting to find the disconnect is to 1) prevent another incident and 2) to have a better deeper friendship. Even if I did all the apologizing first I just realized that most people don’t want a conversation. They don’t want anything bit I’m sorry.

When someone asks me how an electronic device works I have to constantly resist going right to the start to explain how Carbon atoms easily share electrons and when there is a positive charge at one end of a circuit then the electrons move from the negative end to the positive, ah no I just did it again 🤷‍♂️

On a road trip I took longer to buy things in a store and I left my aunt in the car for longer than we anticipated. When I got back to the car, I explained to her why it took so long, step-by-step, image by image. She wasn’t having it. She was so angry and then I asked myself what would work in this instance. I simply said, ‘I’m sorry” and stopped explaining why. That was it. She became joyful and happy and we are back on a great road trip. Thank you for sharing this because until now I did not know why it worked. I just know with some people they don’t want to know why they want a bottom line, and that bottom line varies by individual and situation.

Is AuADHD unique enough for its own book, to come out next? I’m trying to claw my way out of this hole perimenopause and CPTSD has put me in. 😣
