45 minutes. That's how long my son slept before waking up screaming. Every. Single. Time. Naps? 45 minutes. Night stretches? 45 minutes. I tried everything: Blackout curtains. White noise. Dream feeds. Different swaddles. Nothing changed. And everyone had an opinion: "He's overtired." "He's undertired." "Try a later bedtime." I felt like I was losing my mind. Then a lactation consultant said something that changed everything: "Have you checked if he's comfortable lying down?" She explained: Babies sleep in cycles—about 45 minutes long. At the end of each cycle, they briefly wake to check if everything's okay. If they feel safe and comfortable, they go back to sleep. If something feels wrong—even slightly—they fully wake up. For my son, something was waking him every single cycle. She asked about his birth. Long labor. Back-to-back contractions for 8 hours. Rough delivery. She said: "His body might still be holding tension from that.  Especially in his neck and shoulders." She showed me the "shoulder release." Here's how it works: Hold your baby upright against your chest. Gently place your fingers on their shoulders (where the neck meets the shoulder). Apply very light pressure and hold for 20-30 seconds. This helps release tension in the shoulders and upper back—areas that tighten during labor. Do this before naps and bedtime. I tried it that day. That night? He slept for 90 minutes straight. Then 2 hours. Within a week, his naps stretched to 1.5 hours. Within two weeks, he was sleeping 3-4 hour stretches. But here's what I didn't realize— The sleep wasn't just about me getting rest. It was about HIS development. Babies don't just sleep to recharge. They sleep to grow. Their brains develop during deep sleep. Their bodies release growth hormones during long stretches. When babies can't stay asleep past 45 minutes, they never reach deep sleep. They're stuck in light sleep cycles—waking over and over, never fully resting. And that affects their mood, feeding, and development. That's why chronically sleep-deprived babies are fussier. Not because they're "difficult." Because their bodies are exhausted and their brains can't regulate emotions. They cry more. Startle easier. Struggle to self-soothe. Once my son started sleeping longer stretches, everything changed. His whole temperament. He was calmer. Less fussy. More alert and engaged. Because his body was finally getting the rest it needed. Here's what most parents don't realize: If your baby wakes every 30-45 minutes, it's not just exhausting for YOU. It's robbing THEM of critical deep sleep needed for brain development, physical growth, and emotional regulation. Every night this continues, your baby's body stays in a stress response. Never fully resting. Never fully healing. And the longer it goes on, the more their nervous system adapts to fragmented sleep as "normal." This isn't something to wait out. This is something to fix NOW—while their body is still learning how to sleep. If your baby wakes up every 30-45 minutes— If nothing you try extends their sleep— If they seem overtired, fussy, and never fully rested— They're not getting the deep sleep their growing body desperately needs. And every day you wait is another day they miss out on critical development time. Don't let another week go by hoping this improves. The shoulder release I showed you? That's just ONE technique. There are specific releases for the neck, jaw, spine, and hips—each targeting different tension patterns from birth. When you know what to look for and how to release it, sleep changes FAST. And when your baby finally gets quality sleep? Everything improves. Their mood. Their growth. Their development. They become the calm, content baby they were meant to be. If you want your baby to get deeper sleep and cry less, check out the Link in bio 👆 Everything I learned about identifying and releasing birth tension is in there. This isn't just about getting more sleep. It's about giving your baby the foundation they need to thrive. Don't wait another night.
