It depends on the repair done and if they want to check on the repair having actually fixed the issue, but usually they tell you about it first.

Well it kinda depends, what is it there for? Is it for an intermittent noise? You don't know how or when it happens? Well the tech needs to drive over different surfaces to try and recreate the sound and figure out what triggers it to better find out where to look to say something needs replaced.

extended test drives are normal, but they should not be taking your car to go to other places

I saw my car at HEB. He was running errands. I asked him why he was driving my car. He was test driving it to make sure the work was done correctly. Yeah, no thanks

I dropped off my Tesla to get a windshield replacement and looked at the location and it was 30 miles away at some random apartment. Tesla claimed when they plug it in it messes with the location. Sureeeee…

Sometimes when they’re trying to replicate the issue or noise you’re hearing they have to drive it around to make it happen otherwise they may not be able to diagnose the issue

when I owned my shop if the situation needed me to I would drive the customer's car as my own. It usually was because of some weird issue they rather experiencing, but I did it with permission. So I would drive it for a whole week as if it was my own car waiting for the issue to happen. sometimes it would and sometimes it wouldn't. But the difference is is not the situation called for it and I had permission.

Camaro driver here…. My local Chevy dealer let a tech drive my car and they got a toll road ticket. It was miles from the dealership. They offered free oil changes for 5 yrs and paid the fee. I now take a photo of my mileage in front of the person taking my car. Crazy!

No. I expect it to remain on the property of the dealership. I understand a test drive after certain repairs.

It depends on the issue, some issues literally can’t be resolved without driving the car to duplicate the concern. This is perfectly normal.

if your concern is it only happens on the third tuesday of the month, at 40% himidity, between 70 and 80F while sopping at a red light, not a stop sign, while listening to your favorite taylor swift hit, then yes. it is normal.

If you are asking them to diagnose something like a sound, then absolutely. They have to drive it to hear what you are talking about. If it's for like an oil change then no.
