Get them both to the vet, so they can check if one of them is ill. Cats are SO good at hiding illness, but they’re also good at being able to tell when another cat is sick, and that can cause fighting. It could also be smells that the one cat picked up from outside, but that should have dissipated after a bit 🤔

I’m 62 and have had cats my whole life— I’m wondering if Perry picked up some kind of scent in the garage maybe try and wipe him down and spray him with some kind of catnip spray to make him appealing? I know some people are talking about those diffusers , just throwing in my opinion that I have never found them helpful. Have tried them on a few occasions and they never worked. The only thing that has worked with me through my own cats babysitting friends’ cats is keeping myself calm…. doing what you’re doing with the separation, but definitely not too long. I’m leaning towards there being something in the garage that is causing an offensive scent.

It's most likely because of a scent that got on PJ. They make cat calming spray and calming catnip that both work really well. Perry may think he smells like a different cat. Keep them separate for now and do a ton of scent swapping. Beds, clothes, toys.

Sometimes an unfamiliar smell on one and not the other can cause a reaction. when they are both in the same room, pet and coo at both at the same time, stay between them while trying to offer positive reinforcement.

Try the felliway multi cat plugin and do one extra litter box than the amount of cats you have. That will help de stress.

It could be non-recognization aggression have you brought your cats to the vet recently have they been outside even if no to both of these questions I could've just smelt a cat through an open window and then I don't know what goes wrong in their brains but they stop recognizing other cats in the home and just get aggressive

When one cat isn’t feeling well, the other will attack them. Or that could just not be your cat.

Definitely a vet visit for them all, behavioral changes like that happen a lot even if we can’t see them sick something is off enough because 5 years together this shouldn’t be happening

Extreme sudden changes in behavior should be seen by a vet. Pain can cause cats to lash out and cats are REALLY REALLY GOOD at hiding pain/discomfort. If it’s a smell issue, I’d recommend having them groomed specifically as if they had been sprayed by skunks. I think there’s a special soap they use to get rid of strong smells. Good luck! ❤️🐾
