@coachmontessori: It’s not about never complimenting your child. 🤍 It’s about understanding what we are encouraging. When every drawing receives: “Wow, it’s amazing!” “I love it!” “It’s so beautiful!” Children can slowly start creating for our reaction instead of their own satisfaction. Instead of immediately giving our opinion, we can bring the attention back to them: “Do you like it?” “You worked really hard on this.” “I see you used so many colors.” This helps children build internal motivation: “I’m proud of what I created.” Instead of: “Other people like what I created, so it must be good.” Also, try not to immediately ask: “What is it?” Because sometimes… it isn’t anything. Sometimes children are not trying to represent something. They are exploring. Creating. Expressing themselves. If they want to tell you the story behind it, they will. 🤍 And remember: Not saying “wow, so beautiful” doesn’t mean being cold. You can appreciate their work. You can notice details. You can thank them if they made it for you. “I see how much time you spent on this.” “You made this for me? Thank you so much, I really appreciate it.” 💛 #Montessori #MontessoriAtHome #RespectfulParenting #ChildDevelopment #CoachMontessori

is one of the few things I don't agree with on Montessori education. I do a mix of both. Because of course it makes them happy if I like it! it makes me happy when I cook for someone and that person tells me they love it

Give me a break . . . Nothing wrong with praising your child. No one is saying they need to get a daily trophy for getting out of bed. But praise is still ok.

Jeez, how disconnected and robotic does that sound. A more realistic response would be "wow, I love it, tell me all about it". That allows an open response and gives praise without the stigma of admitting you can't tell what it is.

I normally get down to there level and say oh wow you must have worked so hard on this! Can you tell me about it… telling about what they have drawn is really important… ‘making meaning to marks’

You better find some room for praise “in Montessori”, lest you develop kids who feel they can never do good by you

when I did my childcare course we were taught to ask children to tell me about their picture, rather than asking what it is.

In Montessori we don’t say “sure get those shoes why not” we say “if you want to wear ugly shoes you can”
