@annbruen: 📍Craigmore Viaduct, Co. Armagh A walk along a small part of the Ulster Way this morning, with some fantastic views of the impressive Craigmore Viaduct. Located near Bessbrook, outside Newry, this remarkable 18-arch railway bridge stretches for a quarter of a mile across the Camlough River valley. Designed by Irish civil engineer John Benjamin Macneill, it stands 126 feet high and was an incredible achievement for its time. To stop the bridge buckling under its own massive weight, Macneill included 12 concealed internal chambers above each pier, reducing the load while keeping the structure immensely strong. Built by Irish contractor William Dargan in just 3 years between 1849 and 1852, the viaduct is more than 170 years old and still carries the Belfast-to-Dublin Enterprise every day. A real feat of engineering and pretty impressive to view close up. #craigmoreviaduct #18arches #bessbrook #southarmagh #railwayphotography
