Their owner had decided they weren’t worth feeding anymore, so he locked them in a small pen and walked away. No food. No water. Kira and Lucy were beyond desperate by the time they were found. Lucy, the white Lab, had managed to escape a few times. She would run to the neighbors’ house, begging for help, but never found anyone there. She would return home each time—loyal to her abuser. He would kick her, shoot her with BB guns, and vowed to put a real bullet in her when he got the chance. However, one day recently, Lucy convinced a concerned neighbor to follow her home. There, they found Lucy’s companion, Kira—her broken, emaciated body barely recognizable. One side of her face appeared to have been ripped open, leaving a crude scar. Another male dog was with her, just as skeletal, just as hopeless. They were locked in a small outdoor pen with no food or water. When confronted, the owner shrugged and said to “take them.” He didn’t care whether they lived or died. Kira is a skeleton beneath matted fur, covered in wounds. Lucy is no better. Not long ago, she was attacked by the neighborhood males, leaving her neck torn open and covered in deep scabs. They were so infested with fleas that it took four hours in the shower just to start making progress. The male dog was taken in by the neighbor, and Lucy and Kira are now safely with our team. They both are desperately in need of emergency medical care. Despite our resources already running low, we couldn’t leave them behind.
