It is important to distinguish between reports that may have been written during the Prophet's lifetime and the hadith collections that exist today. Even if some companions recorded sayings of the Prophet, those original documents are not the books of hadith we possess today. Those early writings, if they ever existed, have not survived in a verifiable form and therefore cannot be independently examined or authenticated. Nearly two centuries after the Prophet's death, Imam al-Bukhari began compiling hadith. By then, every person who had personally seen or heard the Prophet was long dead. Consequently, al-Bukhari was not recording eyewitness testimony; he was collecting reports from people who claimed to have heard them through successive generations of transmitters. His collection, therefore, is not a compilation of direct testimony but of inherited oral reports about what the Prophet allegedly said and did. The remaining major hadith compilers employed essentially the same method. They travelled widely, gathered narrations from later generations, assessed chains of transmission according to their own criteria, and produced independent compilations. The result is that the canonical hadith collections are not contemporaneous records from the Prophet's lifetime but later compilations of reports transmitted over approximately two centuries before being committed to writing in their present form.
