the way we'll never know what truly happened between them wrecks me. the only reason we know 'the love potion' thing is because dumbledore tried investigating it and he created a bunch of possibilities, then he used elimination to choose the most fitting reason. but it just doesn't sit right with me. we know that merope had stunted magical abilities and didn't attend hogwarts, she couldn't have possibly gotten effective love potions and stalled tom sr long enough for them to get married and conceive a child. I feel like there's more to their story than we know, and we only know dumbledore's version

Someone on reddit brought up the theory that Tom Jr. was just a sociopathic megalomaniac which got me to think, what if Tom Sr. took advantage of a vulnerable poor girl with no one who cares about her and left with she got pregnant, no love potion involved.

And the way that Voldemort phrases his parents relationship when he is brought back in the fourth book makes it feel like he thought they did love each other but that his father left because his mother was a witch. It’s interesting he thinks it’s that way. That his father just hated magic and that’s all, and it parallels what we do know to be true about Severus’s parents relationship and I think it’s more of a reason why people theorize Voldemort could relate to Severus, or realized he did relate. Not that he truly cared though.
