@catchthecatfish123: Artificial Intelligence is changing romance fraud... for better and for worse. The bad... Criminals are already using AI to: • Create fake photos and videos. • Clone voices to sound like loved ones. • Write convincing messages in perfect English. • Generate fake military documents, passports and contracts. • Pretend to be someone they’re not, faster than ever before. The technology makes deception easier. But there’s another side. AI can also help people ask questions they might never have thought to ask. Instead of simply telling someone, “It’s a scam,” imagine asking: Does this document look genuine? Is this military terminology correct? Why would someone with this job be using that email address? Can you explain why this story doesn’t make sense? Those questions help people rediscover something that romance fraud often steals: confidence in their own judgement. For me personally, AI has become something else too. Like many carers, advocates and volunteers, there are evenings when I’ve finished helping my parents, supported victims all day, and finally sit down late at night. My mind is still full of ideas or questions, but it’s too late to message friends or colleagues about something that’s probably quite small. So I’ll often open a friendly AI chat and ask. Not because it’s a replacement for people. It isn’t. It doesn’t replace family, friends, professional support or human connection. But sometimes it’s a patient, non-judgemental place to explore an idea before bed, organise my thoughts, or ask, “Am I thinking about this the right way?” Used responsibly, that’s something worth embracing. Technology itself isn’t good or evil. It’s how we choose to use it that matters.
