Since your all caught up on definitions here. As an Australian. What she meant to say say was “It looks like the Ocean” Because we don’t say we are going to the ocean here, we say we are going to the beach. And with 10,000 beaches in Australia when we say the beach. It’s the ocean. Yes it has a beach but it’s a lake with a beach it’s not THE beach 🌊.

As an Aussie I get exactly what you’re meaning. To us, the beach is an Ocean and is the outside of a country. We don’t have inland “beaches”. They are rivers. Or lakes…. So yes I would have also expected LAKE Michigan would be a LAKE….
