You can’t build a beautiful and from what I see high-end home and expect budget prices. Everything’s expensive today so contractors have to raise their prices in order to take care of their families and their overhead or else they can’t stay in business. You can cut out some of these things if you want to save money you don’t need Venetian plaster and you don’t need wallpaper in a tiny powder room you just want it.

Hey, designer here and avid DIY’er. Venetian plaster is easily accomplished with drywall plaster and super easy to accomplish and customize. Give it a go yourself, I promise I did my entire houses ceiling and it was so easy.

That many rolls seems crazy but my two cents... Wallpaper is tough. We are handy and made lots of mistakes that we had to hide. I feel as though shiplap, backsplash, etc is wayyyy more forgiving. Wallpaper is not. Hire it out.

This may sound weird, but I’ve always wondered if contractors tend to give lower bids before a big project starts and higher bids once the project is already underway. My thinking is that before the project begins, they’re competing to win the job. But once you’re in the middle of it, you don’t really have the option of putting it off, you have to hire someone to finish it….

In Louisiana and that Venetian plaster quote is a little high but for the space and height it’s not as crazy as some are saying. My friend was just quoted $6k for less area and height. I would say $8k top end for yours and $5k low end. Also, be sure “Venetian” is truly what you want, it is a high gloss finish, not the matte textured plaster everyone is doing now.

these are all small jobs in niech trades which makes it so damn expensive. everyone thinks because its a "small job" it should be cheap, when in reality that small job eats up a portion of our day that could have been spent working on 1 site rather then 2 or 3 which is very inefficient. so therefore we end up having to charge for a whole days work regardless of 2hrs or 8hrs.

so as someone who works in the door business helping to run fathers door and trim business and been around it my entire life, i will say this, your time vs your money. yes your husband may be very capable of doing things himself and thats awesome! but is it truly worth yours/his time for him to do it? if it is great! we get people all the time that complain about prices and then get "ill do it myself" and we say ok and they do and then we get the call back to fix their shit and it costs them more for us to fix. so yea just your time vs your money.

I am a contractor. 10k is Diabolical...😭 i could see 3500 MAYBE 4k becuz its alot of troll work doing it in THIN layers. Diffrent from regular mudd.

Quotes sometimes can be outrageous. Sometimes they see the house and amazingly the price goes up…I wanted a garage shell and concrete, quoted $22,000-$30,000. Guy came out and saw my neighborhood and it went to $115,000-$150,000. That’s for a 10x18 foot concrete slab and shell. No doors or finishes.

The quote for Venetian plaster is an “I really don’t want this job” quote. WAY too high! Also, there are other, less expensive options that look almost identical to Venetian plaster that you might want to look into.

Interior finishes are a very expensive part of a build. We are doing our own drywall for probably less than $10k but hiring it out would be $60k + 😅
