For this special occasion, 1 am tackling the brilliant finale of Mozart's « Eine kleine Nachtmusik » (Serenade No. 13 for strings in G major, K. 525). The catchy title Eine kleine Nachtmusik translates to "a little night-music" or "a little serenade". Mozart never intended for this to be the official public title. He simply scribbled "Eine kleine Nacht-Musik" in his private journal to remind himself what kind of piece he had just finished writing. The name stuck when it was finally published long after his death. Despite being one of the most relentlessly joyful, bright, and universally recognized pieces of music in human history, Mozart wrote it in 1787 during a devastatingly bleak summer. He was in Vienna working on the second act of his dark opera Don Giovanni, mourning the recent death of his father, Leopold, and dealing with intense financial strain Even though I've listened to this piece thousands of times since I was a kid, I had never actually tried it in clarinet quartet version until now.
